Work, school, and hectic daily schedules tend to disrupt family togetherness, especially for meals. With today’s modern lifestyle, sometimes it’s difficult to take the time to connect, even when everyone is under one roof. As a wife of a retired military officer, mom of three sons, and former teacher turned school principal, I understand this all too well.
Life can really get hectic when holidays are added to the mix. My solution is to take holiday cruises. The simplicity of celebrating something special on a ship is amazing. We have built so many memories from our cruising during Thanksgiving, Christmas/Chanukah, New Year’s, Halloween, school breaks, and even the Fourth of July and Labor Day weekend! We also cruise for special events such as milestone birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and reunions with our extended families.
There is something for everyone to do onboard a ship. We can enjoy going to shows or playing in the pools. Depending on the ship, we go on waterslides, simulated surfing, watch movies, play laser tag, and so much more. Off the ship, we have more bonding time by taking excursions together and exploring each port. When our children were younger, my husband and I shared alone time in the adults-only area or enjoyed a romantic meal at one of many onboard restaurants
as our children would live it up with the many activities in the kids’ clubs.
Now that our sons are adults and we’ve added three special girls to our mix, during the day we do activities together or separately, and at night we come together for dinner and share our day. At the end of the evening, we usually meet again for a cocktail, a late-night snack, and lots of laughs.
Another huge perk for me is that I don’t have to worry about food shopping and prep, cooking, or cleaning when we celebrate holidays on a cruise ship. All my time is spent enjoying my family! The memories we are creating are priceless as we gather to see the world together and experience new cultures as a family.
